Our Origin & History
Harvard Medical International (HMI) was founded in 1994 as a self-supporting subsidiary of Harvard Medical School (HMS), with the mission to extend internationally the School’s tradition of improving the quality of health care through excellence in clinical medicine, medical education, and biomedical research. Our guiding philosophy has been that every citizen of the world should have access in their own community to quality health care of a world standard.

Through numerous collaborations with health care delivery organizations, academic medical institutions, and other key stakeholders, we have played a major role in the development of health and education infrastructure globally. Through more than 50 programs developed in over 30 countries, we have provided training and education for hundreds of health care professionals, leaders, and students around the world, and helped our clients to achieve measurable progress, as well as national and regional recognition.

Partners Harvard Medical International
In April 2008, Harvard University and Partners HealthCare System (PHS) signed an agreement to enable HMI to become Partners Harvard Medical International (PHMI). This transition enables us to expand our mission to increase access to quality health care around the world, while maintaining a vital academic partnership with Harvard Medical School and its affiliated institutions. Under this agreement, our organization becomes part of the Partners HealthCare family, joining a major academic health care network that includes two of the preeminent Harvard-affiliated institutions. PHMI will also have a governance structure that includes representation from Harvard University and Harvard Medical School.

Our People
The PHMI team brings together a diversity of knowledge and experience touching every corner of health care and education. Our senior leadership group includes members of the Harvard University faculty. Our full-time staff includes experienced professionals from the fields of medicine, nursing, education, research, medical planning, architecture and design, health information technology, business strategy development, and leadership and management training. Our services and programs continue to draw upon the expertise of faculty and staff across Harvard University, at the Medical School, and at all of the Medical School’s affiliated teaching hospitals and institutes.

Our Continued Commitment
As PHMI, we continue to provide our clients around the world with the highest level of service to meet their objectives, and join them in addressing the major challenges facing rapidly evolving health care communities today:

  • The global shortage of well-trained health care professionals, educators, and scientists
  • The need to design and implement clinical and administrative systems of a world standard to support high-quality patient care
  • The need to develop and manage physical and intellectual infrastructure aligned with the health care and education needs of specific regions and populations
