PHMI delivers academic development workshop for Seirei Gakuen Educational Organization in Japan

Monday, September 7, 2009

In July PHMI welcomed a six-member delegation representing leadership from the Seirei Gakuen Educational Organization (SGEO) and Serei Christopher University (SCU) for a two-day academic development workshop. The program was designed to help prepare SGEO as it embarks on the development of its new medical school in Japan over the next three to five years.

The delegation included senior administrators, including SGEO Chairman Ryo Hasegawa and Misako Kojima, President of SCU. The workshop focused on the core components of development for an integrated academic medical center that leverages an existing hospital network. Group discussion and interaction focused on identifying the internal and external drivers, overall timeframe and milestones for development, and necessary interactions with the various clinical teaching facilities and stakeholders. This included approaches to curriculum and faculty/leadership development, not only in terms of recognized best practices but also as informed by the institution’s vision for what kinds of doctors it hopes to graduate. SCU currently operates schools of nursing, rehabilitation sciences, and social work.

The PHMI team included three faculty with experience working with the interfaces of health care delivery, research, and education within the AMC environment: Dr. Tom Aretz, PHMI Vice President and Harvard Medical School professor; Dr. Lynn Eckhert, PHMI Director of Academic Programs and a former senior leader at the University of Massachusetts Medical School; and Professor Elizabeth Armstrong, a Senior Consultant for PHMI who has a rich background in curriculum development at Harvard Medical School.
