In February, a group of 16 faculty from Tokyo Medical & Dental University (TMDU) came to Boston for a weeklong faculty development program. The program drew on faculty from Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and included a wide range of exercises and interactions designed to help TMDU in its efforts to enhance medical education in Japan.
TMDU and PHMI have collaborated since 2002 with the goal of developing and implementing curricular reforms and new teaching approaches in the school’s medical and dental programs. Notable outputs of the PHMI-TMDU collaboration include the development of hybrid courses mixing problem-based learning and didactic lectures, clinical clerkships at three levels, new courses on professional development and introduction to medicine, and other key elements.
Programs held in both Boston and Tokyo to enhance faculty and leadership skills have been a staple of the partnership. This year’s faculty group—comprised of twelve medical faculty and four dental faculty—was divided into three working groups during the visit. One group focused on investigating reforms of the basic and clinical medicine curricula, while another group looked at how to improve TMDU’s clerkship programs. The four dental medicine faculty worked with counterparts at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine to explore approaches to reforming TMDU’s dental curriculum.
The faculty in each group had the opportunity for direct observations at the medical and dental schools as well as in the Harvard-affiliated Brigham & Women’s Hospital. They also observed a mock tutorial session involving a group of second-year Harvard Medical School students.
