PHMI Director Elizabeth Brown honored for nursing leadership

Monday, September 14, 2009

Elizabeth (Betsy) Brown, PHMI Director of Clinical Services, has been given the inaugural Dean Ruth Kelleher Award by Boston College for her commitment to the nursing profession. Brown, who is a graduate of the Boston College Connell School of Nursing, received the award at the school’s annual alumni reunion.

The award is named for Rita Kelleher, who arrived at Boston College in 1947 as the nursing school’s first faculty member and served as its dean for 20 years.

“Like Rita Kelleher, Betsy Brown is a compassionate, committed steward of the nursing profession," said Connell School Dean Susan Gennaro. She added that Brown “is instrumental in helping PHMI's partner institutions enhance the competency and leadership of their nursing teams, and integrate key input on nursing practice into hospital planning and program implementation.

Brown joined then-Harvard Medical International in 2002, and has since worked on numerous programs focused on health systems development, hospital planning, clinical service development, professional development and training, and quality improvement. With colleagues from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, she developed an innovative nursing leadership program that has been implemented in India and Turkey. She has also played a major role in assisting PHMI partners in developing approaches to patient-centered care, planning facilities to foster teamwork among physicians and nurses, and helping hospital partners develop the core principles of their nursing service. She is currently working with PHMI faculty and other nurse leaders on planning for a new nursing school to be launched in Pakistan under the auspices of the Defence Housing Authority Islamabad.
