PHMI to feature program experience at international health care quality conference

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Four members of the leadership team at Partners Harvard Medical International have been invited to Dublin, Ireland to participate in the 26th annual conference of the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua).

The PHMI team members will be presenting on a range of topics at the conference, drawing on PHMI client collaborations in Dubai, India, and Turkey and other experiences:
  • Dr. John Helfrick, a PHMI Senior Consultant who is a past president of ISQua, will present on the creation of the ideal quality and safety oversight process. He will discuss PHMI’s work to establish the quality oversight structure for Dubai Healthcare City. Dr. Helfrick will also take part in a case discussion of how the drive to prepare for Joint Commission International accreditation at Wockhardt Hospital in Bangalore, India had a significant impact on the incidence of hospital-acquired infections.
  • Elizabeth Brown, Director of Clinical Services at PHMI, will present a session entitled Improving Quality Requires Leadership: An International Perspective to Develop a Nurse Manager Competency Model to Manage Performance. The session will focus on the development of effective nurse competency models to track and manage performance. PHMI has successfully helped hospitals in India and Turkey develop these models. Brown will be joined by two colleagues from the Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center who have played a key role in PHMI workforce development projects: Patricia Folcarelli, Director of Professional Practice Development, and Joanne Ayoub, Director of Organizational Development.
  • Dr. Frederick van Pelt, Director at PHMI, will take part in a panel discussion on the importance of full disclosure and apology as an integral part of maintaining a quality improvement culture.
  • Dr. Lynn Eckhert, PHMI Director of Academic Programs, will present on patient safety issues in pediatrics.
  • Helfrick, Brown, and van Pelt will also join PHMI consultant Dr. Tim Shaw for a discussion of online education in quality and patient safety. The group will introduce “spaced education,” an online initiative developed at Harvard Medical School that PHMI has used in its client work abroad.
