Faculty from Tokyo Medical & Dental University Visit PHMI for Faculty Development Program

Monday, March 15, 2010

A group of 17 faculty members from Tokyo Medical & Dental University (TMDU) traveled to Boston in February for a faculty development program developed by PHMI. Faculty from Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine taught much of the program, which sought to train and further educate TMDU faculty as they work to develop and implement curricular reforms and new teaching approaches.

Since 2002, PHMI and TMDU have collaborated to enhance medical and dental education in Japan. Noteworthy outcomes from the collaboration include the introduction of a new medical curriculum, new clinical clerkships, the implementation by TMDU of its own faculty development program, and improved school ranking in Japan.

The four dental faculty and thirteen medical faculty in attendance worked in four teams focused on the areas of curriculum development in Basic Sciences, Dental, Clinical, and Head and Neck. The program featured observations at area institutions based on which aspect of the curriculum they were addressing. Local institutions featured included Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary.
