Dr. de Silva joined PHMI in 2007 after contributing to a number of PHMI initiatives on a consulting basis. At PHMI he works with other faculty members and content experts to direct PHMI programs focused on clinical service development, quality improvement, and strategic planning.
He joined PHMI following a long career as a clinical cardiologist at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he served as Director of Medical Education in the Cardiovascular Division (1990-2003) and co-founded and then directed the hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. His clinical and research interests have included animal and human studies on ventricular fi brillation and sudden death, long-term care of the cardiac patient, cardiac rehabilitation, end-of-life care in cardiology, applications of advanced technology at the end of life, medical ethics, and medical education. He has published and lectured widely on these and other subjects, amassing over 100 papers during his academic career.
Dr. de Silva grew up in Singapore and Malaysia and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Malaya. He also earned a master’s degree in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He received his postgraduate training in Boston’s Longwood Medical Area, training in Internal Medicine at the New England Deaconess Hospital and in Cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
He has been President of the Boston Chapter of the American Heart Association and has been, or is, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and the Royal Society of Medicine, London, and Chair of the Board of Overseers of the French Library of Boston.
