Tripoli, Libya

In 2008 Partners Harvard Medical International conducted a comprehensive study of diabetes care and prevention in Libya. The study was sponsored by the Hess Corporation, a leading independent energy company, in cooperation with the National Oil Corporation of Libya. PHMI reviewed the current status of diabetes care and prevention in Libya, consulted with local and international experts to identify best approaches to creating sustainable improvements, and helped to facilitate a national survey to establish diabetes prevalence conducted by the World Health Organization. The study involved contributions from faculty and experts representing Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, Joslin Diabetes Center, and the International Diabetes Federation. In 2008 PHMI also trained more than 90 Libyan doctors through continuing medical education programs held in Boston and the Libyan cities of Tripoli and Benghazi.
