Improving health care delivery in Korea

Asan Medical Center
Seoul, South Korea

Project scope:

The 2,200-bed Asan Medical Center, founded in 1989, is Korea’s top tertiary care center. Through its affiliation with Ulsan Medical College, Asan Medical Center offers postgraduate training programs in all specialties and has a rapidly growing research effort. Since commencing a relationship with PHMI in 1996, Asan has pursued new initiatives focused on improving hospital infrastructure and quality, expanding the scope of clinical services at Asan, and providing its staff with opportunities to study advances in their respective fields at Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospitals.

Collaboration with PHMI:

Asan Medical Center’s collaboration with PHMI has focused on three key tracks:
  • Professional development programs for physicians, nurses, scientists, and technical/administrative staff: PHMI has facilitated numerous clinical and research observerships based at Harvard Medical School-affiliated institutions, covering a wide range of specializations and enabling Asan personnel to complete training relevant to program development at Asan.
  • Clinical and research program development: PHMI has assisted Asan as it has developed the strategy and infrastructure to support new and innovative hospital-based clinical and research programs in the areas of oncology and diabetes.
  • Scientific symposia: PHMI and Asan have been the joint sponsors of six biennial international symposia, held in Seoul, dedicated to gathering thought leaders to discuss the latest in cutting-edge research and practice.
