Raising the standard of care and education in India

Sri Ramachandra University
Chennai, India

Project scope:

When it opened in 1985, Sri Ramachandra University had about one hundred students and operated a free hospital. The institution established a collaboration with then-Harvard Medical International in 1997 focused on enhancing medical education.

Collaboration with PHMI:

Workshops on faculty and leadership development have been staples of the alliance between Sri Ramachandra University and PHMI. The school has instituted numerous reforms in its medical curricula and raised the institution’s stature as a regional leader offering high-quality education.

Parallel to the alliance’s focus on education, PHMI has worked with Sri Ramachandra University on a quality improvement initiative focused on enhancing the quality of care in the school’s affi liated medical center. Through on-site professional development and regular video conferences and other exchanges, PHMI has helped the medical center to institute many new processes and policies to improve quality management. These efforts mwere rewarded in early 2009 when Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre was reviewed by Joint Commission International surveyors and granted JCI accreditation.
