Building high-caliber research programs

Xinjiang Medical University
Urumqi, China

Project scope:

Xinjiang Medical University (XMU) is a not-for-profit university with multiple teaching hospitals that provide clinical care and education to the people of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, an area in northwest China. The school entered an agreement with PHMI as part of efforts to develop a robust research infrastructure according to international standards.

Collaboration with PHMI:

PHMI’s work with XMU has focused on the development of centers of excellence in cardiovascular disease research, oncology, and animal research and care. On-site training sessions and programs based at top research institutions in the U.S. have helped XMU to institute the critical components of high-caliber research. Through PHMI, eight XMU scientists have completed research observerships at U.S. research institutions. Their experiences have helped to spur a number of advances at their home institution, including the establishment of up-to-date techniques in stem cell research, gene therapy, molecular pathology, and tissue banking.

In 2009, the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University was accredited by the Council on Accreditation of the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), whic recognizes the humane use of animals in research.
