Leading education reform in Japan

Tokyo Medical & Dental University
Tokyo, Japan

Project scope:

Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU), established in 1946, is a public university located in the heart of Tokyo. The school partnered with then-Harvard Medical International in 2002 with the goal of developing and implementing curricular reforms and new teaching approaches in the medical and dental programs.

Collaboration with PHMI:

Over the course of this relationship, PHMI has worked closely with a core group of educators leading reform efforts at the university. Intensive faculty and leadership development programs held in both Boston and Tokyo have been a staple of the alliance, and multiple Harvard Medical School faculty members have spent considerable time teaching and working with TMDU colleagues. Notable outcomes of this work include:

  • Introduction of a new medical curriculum featuring hybrid courses mixing problem- based learning and didactic lectures, new clinical clerkships, and other courses
  • Faculty development programs delivered by PHMI that have been attended by more than 300 faculty
  • Development by TMDU of its own faculty development program, which has trained more than 1,000 faculty
  • Improved school ranking in three key categories used to evaluate Japanese universities: entrance exam scores (ranked third), national common exam scores (first), and residency placements (second) enhancing medical education
