Reshaping medical education in Germany

Dresden Technical University
Dresden, Germany

Project scope:

In 1996, members of the Carl Carus Gustav Faculty of Medicine at the Technical University of Dresden forged an alliance with then-Harvard Medical International focused on reforming medical education. The Dresden faculty sought to invigorate its programs and enhance the school’s regional and national standing by instituting curricular reforms emphasizing more active, student-centered learning.

Collaboration with PHMI:

The early years of the PHMI-Dresden collaboration brought about a comprehensive reform of the school’s medical curriculum and established regular programs for faculty, academic leaders, and students that remain staples of the alliance. During the course of its long partnership with PHMI, the Dresden university has built a reputation for excellence in medical education, and gained national recognition from the German Academic Exchange Service.

The institution continues to work with PHMI to explore and implement innovations in clinical education. More recently, the focus of collaboration has expanded to the school’s affiliated teaching hospital, where an initiative is underway to develop the Carus Consilium Sachsen, a community health care network designed with the goal of improving health care delivery in the region of Saxony.
